Rare Medal of the Order of the British Empire

The Medal of the Order of the British Empire was first established in 1917. The medal was part of the Order and could be awarded for either meritorious service or for gallantry. It was awarded to 2,015 people, 800 of whom were from foreign countries.

Therefore, this medal is one of 1215 issued to British Citizens and it was issued unnamed.

This medal is in its original box of issue and privately named.

Gladys Mary Tarzey (nee Davies) was awarded the Medal of the Order of the British Empire announced in the London Gazette Supplement 23rd January 1920, pp 967 under the section for Queen Mary’s Army Auxiliary Corps, with the entry – Davies, No 4986 Cook Gladys

Gladys Mary Tarzey (nee Davies) was born 19th March 1895 (d. 1958 Portsmouth) at Portsea Island, Portsmouth, Hampshire. She married Sidney Percival TARZEY in the 3rd quarter of 1919.

 

 

It is of note that her husband, Sidney Percival Tarzey was awarded a British War Medal for war service at Portsmouth Dockyard and later, an EIIR Imperial Service Medal. Awarded for his services at Portsmouth Naval Dockyards. Sadly, these medals are not present.

 

Also  included, to the Son-in-Law of Gladys and Sidney Tarzey.

With ticker tape confirmation slip – BELLCOURT, Anthony Jasper.  Professional and Technology Officer IV. Together with The Royal Life Saving Society medals named to – A. J. BELLCOURT JUNE 1938. This is in its box of issue. A J Bellcourt married Jessica Tarzey, daughter of Gladys and Sidney Tarzey.
