The medal roll for the 1st Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment confirms the entitlement for the medal and this roll states that he took part in the operations South of Wadi Halfa, 8th April 1898. Sidney Herbert Freeman was a 20 year old, born in Edwinstowe, Nottingham when he attested into the Lincolnshire Regiment in 1885.
He served for 18 years and attained the rank of Sergeant. However he was returned to the ranks after a charge of drunkenness whilst on active service. During his career he served in Malta, India and Egypt as well as Home service.
