Rudolf Victor Dawes became the most influential Headmaster of East Grinstead Grammar School (now Imberhorne College) whose headship spanned World War 2. Before the Second World War he had attended Cambridge, where he won a half-blue for cross-country running. He later taught at Plymouth College, Rossall School (please note his WW1 MIC card address), Nantwich Grammar, Acton Grammar and took his first headship at Donnington Grammar, Spalding, Lincs. prior to being appointed Headmaster at East Grinstead Grammar School. He was highly though of at East Grinstead and returned after WW2 to resume post as head until 1961. It is noted that he was awarded the MC in the Great War and that he spent the duration of the Second World War in the Defence of Gibraltar. It is of particular interest that he is mentioned in reference to an exhibition at the Natural History Museum for fossil contributions obtained during tunnel excavations in Gibraltar (by Major R V Dawes R.A.).
