Attestation Papers show that he was born Joseph Dawson, in Brownedge Parish, Stoke, Stafford. Enlisted 21st December 1878 at Newcastle under Lyme.

 

Military History sheet confirms his medal entitlements. He was married to Ellen Ward at St Annes Church Brownedge, 13th September 1883.

Medical history refers to Syphilis and Cataracts. Transferred to Reserves 1890. Statement of Services show him being paid Good Conduct pay, which was forfeited for a crime. Copies of medal Rolls confirm entitlement.
