Edward Joseph Anstee was born in Pembroke, Wales 17th April 1869 and he signed on to the Royal Navy for 12 years on the 20th August 1891. He joined as a Shipwright and rose to become Divisional Carpenter in H.M. Coast Guard in 1913. He served throughout the Great War and was demobilised 1919. 

The 1901 Census shows him on the crew of HMS Warspite as Carpenter’s Mate.
