Samuel Mabbreay H.M.S. Blonde

This is a superb example of the China Medal of 1841-42. It is correctly named to SAMUEL MABBREAY H. M. S. BLONDE. Samuel Mabbreay was born June 1818 at Tiverton, Devonshire. Records show that during his career he served as Captain of the Mizzen Top on HMS BLONDE and Captain of the Fore Top on HMS RACER. He first went to sea as a Boy in 1829. This interesting sailor served afterwards in the Merchant Service.

Captain of the Foretop HMS Racer

He is on the crew list of the Maria Somes which transported 259 prisoners from England to Hobart, Van Dieman’s Land, in 1850. On this ship is a particular group of 30 lads known as the Parkhurst Boys, from the Isle of Wight. He lived in Gosport, near Portsmouth, Hampshire.

Whilst researching this medal and individual it is worth passing on the, as common with data input, he is to be found under the correct spelling of Mabbreay and also frequently under Mabbray.
